The October NNEPRA Board Meeting discussed a fare increase for certain Downeaster tickets.

The rationale is as follows:

This fare plan presents the proposed fare structure for one-way Downeaster tickets, 10-ride passes and monthly commuter passes.

Increasing costs associated with Amtrak operations and fuel are the primary catalyst for the increase. Adjusting fares to meet rising costs allows NNEPRA to stay within budget and minimize or eliminate the impact on taxpayer contributions.

This plan recommends the following:

  • Increase one-way fares in some markets by up to $2
  • Increase multi-ride passes in some markets up to 10%

In addition, marketing efforts and promotions will focus on increasing longer segment trips, including inbound tourists and Boston bound business travelers to and from Maine stations to increase average per passenger fare.
