When passengers are disruptive (in language and excessive boisterousness), an awkward standoff usually ensues. Some offended passengers just grin and bear it while others decide to move. That's when the conductor steps in.
During our interview with conductor Jim Nawrocki, we asked about those offensive behaviors that have no place on trains. Jim uses the three-strike rule, intervening like a Puma! He was quite candid.

This is the second in a series of interviews with Conductor Jim Nawrocki who worked his last shift on the Downeaster on September 27th. TrainRiders/NE followed Jim as he prepared train #686 for departure from the Brunswick.
The Conductor is in charge of the train, working closely with the Engineer and the Assistant Conductor, to make sure the train ride exceeds passenger expectations. As Jim describes his day, nothing is left to chance.
We'll release another section of our extended interview with Jim next week. You'll likely learn why he is known to some as The Puma!

On Monday evening, September 27th, train #687 left Boston for Brunswick under the supervision of Amtrak Conductor Jim Nawrocki. He performed his duties that night with the same professionalism he demonstrated during the previous 15 years. But this trip was different, it was his final day on the Downeaster.
Passengers on board 686/687 sought Jim out to thank him for his attentive work 'on the rails.' At one stop, he received an affectionate card and a hug from a commuter. At Woburn, a pizza appeared from TrainRiders/NE board member Fred Smith and an impromptu meal got underway.
During the trip, TrainRiders/NE was privileged to interview Jim about his career and retirement. Below, is but one of Jim's thoughtful responses.
Jim came to Amtrak after several years as a TrainRiders/NE Train Host. These volunteers serve as goodwill ambassadors to promote patronage of The Downeaster; to assist passengers with information onboard the train, along the route and at scheduled stops; to assist train crews in duties as requested by them and to promote rail safety. Jim did that with enthusiasm. And our board is enthusiastic that Jim will be joining us as a board member next month.
