Brunswick Station is Waiting for the Downeaster PDF Print E-mail

It’s looking good – the station, that is.

NNEPRA is still awaiting a Washington decision to provide some $35 million in track & signal improvement money to expand the Downeaster service to Freeport and Brunswick.

Word has it that the Federal Railroad Administration will start deciding whose applications get funded after the first of the year.  Meanwhile, the station is waiting.

As we discovered in pursuit of the Downeaster service, most good things take time...lots of it.

Thanks to Jim Nawrocki for the photo.

Exeter, NH, has just the opposite problem: Heavy Downeaster passenger traffic but  no station building to offer protection and ticketing. Currently, passengers use a platform - darn cold in the winter!

The Exeter Train Committee, headed by Bob Hall of TrainRiders/Northeast, is moving to address this shortcoming.  A good article on the Exeter effort is at: http://www.seacoastonline.com/articles/20091208-NEWS-912080324

Brunswick is ahead of the curve. The Saco stop was a mud pile for the inaugural run in 2001. All they need is a platform.
