NNEPRA Throws Luncheon for Downeaster Volunteers

NNEPRA welcomed nearly 100 volunteers to their Appreciation Luncheon on Monday at the Clarion Hotel in Portland. Many of TrainRiders/NE's Train and Station Hosts were in attendance.

Executive Director Patricia Quinn updated the gathering on the latest Downeaster performance and project news. For many of those present, it was their annual "checkup" on the health of the Downeaster.

The new board chairman, John Melrose, joined Patricia in thanking the volunteers for the thousands of hours they put in on behalf of the service. Mr. Melrose was former DOT commissioner under Governor Angus King.

Those in attendance left with a better understanding of the Downeaster's mission - its relationship with the communities it serves and NNEPRA's plans for Downeaster growth.

We invite you to become a train or station host. The purpose of the TrainRiders Host Program is to have volunteers serve as goodwill ambassadors; to promote patronage of the Downeaster; to assist passengers with information onboard the train, along the route and at scheduled stops; to assist train crews in duties as requested by them; and promote rail safety.

Yes, you get to ride the train for FREE during your onboard duties. Go here for details.

It was a grand meeting!!! This article is under construction.

Our invited guests were Patricia Quinn, Executive Director of NNEPRA, David Fink, President of Pan Am Railways and Bruce A. Van Note, Maine Commissioner of Transportation (Commissioner Van Note was unable to attend). Much is happening with passenger and freight rail in Maine and there was no better place to get a full briefing than at our Annual Meeting. In addition, we celebrated the Downeaster's 18th birthday!

More to come!

We were honored to hear from Senator Susan Collins, chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Transportation. She has been instrumental in increasing Amtrak's budget and has been a friend and constant supporter of TrainRiders/NE.

Our Maine delegation in Washington has regularly advanced the transportation needs of our state and made the Downeaster financially possible. We are indebted to their past and continued support.

Downeaster Makes It 'Big Time' in National Amtrak Publications

Amtrak Ink, a monthly publication for and about Amtrak employees and the national train service's economic impact along its routes, allotted a lot of 'ink' to the Downeaster in their January and February editions.

In January, Saco, Wells and Portland scored in the top 20 stations with the highest eCSI (electronic Customer Satisfaction Index) Go here for the graphic.

AmtrakInk Feb17The February edition had two impressive articles - "Employees On the Downeaster" and "Economic Impact of the Downeaster." It is good to see our crews get the national attention they deserve.
