Rescue
This has been a rough week for those of us in hospitality. It has been very hot (especially in the kitchen and in the laundry) and guests (who maybe didn’t bring their best selves) have flocked to Maine. We are all crazy busy. Today we received a call from a couple in need. They arrived via Amtrak in Wells and were dismayed to find no cabs, Ubers or other means of transportation. They finally called the Nonantum to see if we could lend a hand. I agreed to buzz down to Wells and get them. I picked them up and not too far into the journey the woman realized she had left her backpack on the train. The backpack contained her passport (she is from the UK) and her iPad. Yikes!

On the way to the hotel she filled out an online form (on her phone) and left messages with every Amtrak number, she could find. I reassured her that this was Maine, that we all know each other and that we would figure it out.

Three of us at the hotel started calling everyone we could think of who might know someone who works for Amtrak. Chambers. Visitors Bureaus. You name it. We called them. We knew the train was headed to Brunswick and then back south, so we had a pretty short window of opportunity to find the backpack.
I called the number from an email to Amtrak from 2019 to a person named Jennifer. The voice mail said “This is Natalie. Leave a message, and I will call you within 24 hours”. And then she said, “Or send an email. Here is my address”. I sent an email but didn’t give it much hope. (I have since learned that this Angel was Natalie Bogart.
Less than an hour later a supervisor named Dean from Amtrak called and said Natalie had reached out to him. I explained the issue, and in no time flat, the backpack was located, transferred to another train and dropped to me at the Wells train station by a Conductor named Heather.

It was one of those really proud moments when I realized how grateful I am to be living in a state full of tourism professionals who have each other’s back and make sure our guests are given the best hospitality anywhere.

Thank you to my Nonantum friends who called everyone in sight (Louise Fortunato DeLorenzo even went back to the station on her way home after a long day to try to find someone to talk to) and to the team at Amtrak for making the magic happen. I know there is a very happy visitor in Kennebunkport tonight thanks to your commitment to excellence!
